Umbu was called ambu, imbu, ombu, corruptions of the Tupi-Guarani word "y-mb-u", which meant "tree-that-gives-drinking". Its pulp is sweet and sour and widely consumed in the form of soft drinks, juices, ice cream, sweets and jams. With an exotic and unmistakable flavor, its juice is extremely refreshing, even mentioned by Euclides da Cunha in "Os Sertões".
